Brain Teaser

Festus hired Buford to work the drive through window at his new restaurant

“Critter-on-a-Stick”

Every “Varmint Meal” is supposed to contain 4 items . . .

  • Critter
  • Stick
  • RC Cola
  • Fried fat chips

At the end of the first day Buford served exactly 100 Varmint Meals, but he made the following errors

  • 70 meals contained no Critter
  • 75 contained no stick
  • 85 contained no RC Cola
  • 80 contained no fried fat chips

What is the minimum number of Varmint Meals that contained none of the 4 items? (The customer left with an empty sack).

The answer is . . . 10

Add up all the errors, and you find that 100 Varmint Meals were missing a total of 310 parts.

That total means that, at a minimum, 100 meals were missing 3 parts, and 10 (the remainder when dividing 310 by 100) must have missed all 4 parts.

On the flip side, as many as 70 may have missed all 4 parts.

John Medora wrote that it may be easier to understand if you

count the number of items served - 30 critters, 25 sticks, 15 colas

and 20 chips. That is a total of 90. Out of 100 bags then

the minimum to be empty is 10 (100-90).
